Beck Krefting is Professor of American Studies specializing in stand-up comedy studies and Director of the Center for Leadership, Teaching, and Learning at Skidmore College. She is the former vice-president and president of the American Humor Studies Association as well as a co-founder of the Critical Humor Studies Association. Her monograph titled: All Joking Aside: American Humor and Its Discontents (Johns Hopkins UP) charts the history and economy of charged humor or stand-up comedy in the service of social justice. She has published dozens of articles about stand-up comedy in edited collections, academic journals, and public forums and has been invited to present her scholarship nationally and internationally. Using her skills as a professional comedian and member of Nashville’s professional improv troupe, the Skeleton Crew, she taught comic theater to adolescents in Washington D.C. for six years. She continues to perform stand-up comedy discussing important matters like vulva positivity and dispensing advice on sleep baking and anal ozoning.
